What’s Going On?

If you have never been to one of our open houses before, they are simply a gathering of the local tech community to learn more about how things are designed and made. We have stations set up that show the software and hardware we use to improve product development. A big draw is our extensive 3D Printing capabilities as well as our leading edge virtual testing software.  It is a great way to expose your family, friends, kids, and coworkers to what engineering and manufacturing are all about.

Something new, a Pre Show

Before the open house we will have a talk on metal 3D Printing from 3 to 4 pm. Dr. Dhruv Bhate will go over how metal 3D Printing works, talk about why it is such a breakthrough, and share some examples of how to use it effectively.

Then we have a new event from 4:30-6:00: Watch the Experts in our “Perfect Pitch” event. We have asked some of the area’s best mentors to startups to come and pitch the same company. See how a pitch should be done and share more than a few laughs along the way.

Meet others who make stuff

The best part of this event is getting to meet other people who work in engineering and manufacturing.  You can go to events all year, but they tend to be focused on an industry, startups, or a certain part of the state. Everyone comes to PADT’s open houses and it is a great chance to meet and share ideas.

So, just come.  It is fun and we promise two things:  You will learn something and you will meet someone new.  Bring the family, bring your neighbors.

Let’s celebrate what we do!

Register at bit.ly/nerdtoberfest so we know how much beer, water, soda, and pizza to get.

GCOI 2015 – Celebrating Arizona’s Technology Community

gcoi_iconFor those of us that are part of the Arizona Technology community, the official kickoff of holiday and end of year celebrations is the Governor’s Celebration of Innovation, or GCOI.  A who’s who of key people from startups to large aerospace firms gather at the convention center to recognize students, academicians, companies, and individuals who have had a significant impact on the State’s high tech industries.  This is always a special evening for PADT because many of the attendees, and usually a few of the award winners, are our customers.

In fact, for 2015 we are proud to congratulate the following long time PADT customers who were recognized last night:

  • Medtronic Tempe Campus for Innovator of the Year, Large Company
  • Raytheon Missile Systems for winning the Pioneering Award
  • ASU’s Michael Crow, the OneNeck IT Services People’s Choice Lifetime Achievement Award winner (ASU is a large PADT customer… so we feel Dr. Crow is our customer as well.)

You can find a full list of winners and some great pictures  from the event in Tishin Donkersley’s article at AZ Tech Beat.

This fantastic event is put on by the Arizona Technology Council and the Arizona Commerce Authority.  For those that were there: Mac & Cheese bar FTW.

About the Awards

As in past years, PADT was honored to be able to fabricate the awards that were handed out. This year we used the overall design for the event, created by Atom, as our starting point. We used our Stratasys FDM printers to make the stair steps and “tech guy silhouette” The graphics are then printed on large stickers that are adhered to the back of an Arizona’ish shaped piece of plexiglass.

The PADT Booth

This year we decided to not bring a 3D Printer and instead focus on parts made on a wider variety of printers. The hit for visitors were the metal parts that were made on ConceptLaser Direct Laser Melting systems.  In addition we got to talk about the great work that our product development team did for GlobalStar on the Spot devices and Orthosensor for their intelligent orthopedic sensors. We even had a few simulation people come by to talk ANSYS.

Hopefully you had a chance to talk with Andrew Miller, Kathryn Pesta, or Mario Vargas. If you missed us and want to know more about PADT, what we do, or the Arizona Technology Community, reach out and we will be happy to chat.

Innovation Arizona Website: InnovationAZ.com

Innovation_Arizona_Website

It is here.  And it is really well done.

InnovationAZ.com

Arizona has been a place where the pioneering spirit, innovation, and good old fashioned brain power could combine to make entrepreneurial successes.  But until now, the fact that Arizona is so spread out and that Arizonans tend to be so independent meant that there has been no single place to go to learn about what is going on, what is available, and who the players in this area are.

With today’s launch of InnovationAZ.com that has changed.  After spending a some time delving through the pages I can tell you that the Arizona Commerce Authority has done a great job pulling this dynamic and changing community together in one place on the web. Sections include:

  • Programs for entrepreneurs
  • Resources for anyone involved in innovation
  • A review of the Tech Community in Arizona including who is here, what makes the state such a successful place for technology companies, and what industries thrive here.
  • A comprehensive guide to funding of all types that is available in the state

Check it out, I already learned a thing or three I did not know before I scanned the sight. While you are at it check out the sister sites:  azaerospace.com and azsolarstate.com.

Arizona Innovation Grant Winners Announced, Three are PADT Related

imageThe Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA) finished up the Fall 2012 Arizona Innovation Challenge Grant by announcing the six winners:

  1. Athena Wireless Communications, Surprise, AZ
  2. Instant BioScan, Tucson, AZ
  3. Post. Bid. Ship, Tucson, AZ
  4. Serious Integrated, Chandler , AZ
  5. Stat Doctors, Scottsdale, AZ
  6. Stimwave Technologies, Scottsdale, AZ

This is a great collection of companies that show a lot of promise. We are pleased to see the ACA making strong investments in the state’s technology sector. The bi-annual business plan competition awards qualified, innovative startups and early stage companies up to $250,000 in grant funding capital to grow their business, ultimately advancing innovation and technology commercialization opportunities in Arizona. Winning companies were selected from a pool of more than 200 applicants and 25 semifinalists.

PADT is very honored to note that we have connections with three of the winners:

Serious Integrated is a company that PADT has made several investments in and we are also proud to have them as a customer.  We just recently covered them in this very blog.

Post. Bid. Ship. is another company that PADT has invested in, in this case through the ATIF Sidecar Fund 1.

Stimwave Technologies is one of PADT’s rapid prototyping customers.

Several of PADT’s owners also participated as early round judges to help select the semifinalists.  We had to recuse ourselves from a large number of applications because so many of our customers are involved, which is great to see.

Congratulations to all the finalists and to the winners, and we look forward to meeting new companies in the next competition.
