3D Printing: Why You Should Request Work on the Neo450

3D Printing with the Neo450
Tags:

Have you heard of the Stratasys Neo450? Likely not, that’s why we wrote this article. Not many are aware of one of our newer in-house additions. The Neo450 is the latest in 3D printing for stereolithography technology. Faster, larger, and a dual spot beam, what’s not to like? However, you may be wondering “why should I switch over if I’m already happy with the parts I receive?”. Good question, let us properly introduce the Neo450 and help you decide if it’s the right fit for your next project(s).

3D Printing with SLA material, Somos WaterShed

What’s Best About the Neo450

  • The Neo is up to 40% faster compared to older SLA systems
  • Dual spot beam achieves details without sacrificing speed
  • The minimum feature size is 0.006” in XY/0.016” in Z
  • Build volume is 17.7” x 17.7” x 15.75”

Not only does the Neo450 produce exceptional sidewall quality, but the build volume is 17.7” x 17.7” x 15.75”. Our other clear SLA machine is limited to 10”x10”x10” and even though the Neo is larger, it still prints at a faster speed, meaning quicker turnaround.

Material Spotlight: Somos WaterShed

Advantages of Somos WaterShed

  • Industrial standard in clear 3D printing for over a decade
  • Strong enough to withstand intense wind tunnel testing (perfect for automotive or aerospace)
  • ABS-like material properties
  • PBT-like properties
  • Durable & clear
  • Smooth finish
  • Water-resistant

If you are requesting Visijet Clear (now called Accura ClearVue) on our old SLA system, you should switch over to Somos WaterShed on the Neo450. Majority of cases we recommend the switch but, it’s important to note that Accura ClearVue and Somos WaterShed are not the exact same. Somos WaterShed has excellent clarity but a more prominent blue hue compared to ClearVue. WaterShed also does not have as much impact strength. Other than that, they are comparable. Another important question people want to know is how this switch will affect the price. It won’t. 3D printing with WaterShed on the Neo is the same as with Accura ClearVue on the old system.

Reminder: Although parts are “clear”, they are not perfectly clear – a clear coat can be added as additional post-processing to improve clarity.

Time vs Cost vs Part (size/qty) Overview

Again, what most customers always want to know is “How much will this cost me and how long will it take?” Using the Somos WaterShed, we will provide you with a rough estimate of what time vs cost looks like using an example part.

1 Part with Somos WaterShed

  • Time: 2-3 days
  • Cost per part: $75
  • Total Cost= $75

10 Parts with Somos WaterShed

  • Time: 2-3 days
  • Cost per Part: $60 each
  • Total Cost= $600

100 Parts with Somos WaterShed

100 Parts on the Neo450
  • Time: 4-5 days
  • Cost per part: $30 each
  • Total Cost=$3,000

1 Filled Platform with Somos WaterShed

  • Time: 6-8 days
  • Cost per Part: $26 each (289 parts)
  • Total Cost= $7,514

As you have read, the Neo450 is an exceptional new machine with much to offer due to its size, speed, and resolution. Plus, we are especially looking forward to expanding on our current SLA materials: Somos Evolve, Accura ClearVue, and Accura ABS Black. As always, not every project will need the same solution based on size, qty, features, etc. If you have any more questions about if the Neo450 is a great fit for your project, please contact us at 3dprint@padtinc.com.
