An Ansys Speos Black Box is a benefit to the Speos Light Box feature and is used to protect intellectual property when exchanging Speos project files.
The following example is of a wide-angle lens simulation captured within an Ansys Speos Black Box. In the original simulation, the ray propagation through the system is captured at each interface, however, with the Black Box system, rays that enter the Black Box propagate in a straight line to the location of the output rays. This behavior is only used for graphic representation purposes and does not reflect the real ray propagation that is occurring within the system. The rays exiting the Black Box follow nonsequential ray tracing just like in the original simulation.


The primary function of an Ansys Speos Light Box is to exchange data between vendors and customers through the export and import of geometries and their associated optical parameters. The data exchange file is encrypted so only Speos software can read it. This file can be password protected and black boxed.
When data is contained within a Speos Black Box, the contents cannot be accessed directly by the user. Those contents include geometry, sources, and files that dictate the optical property of each. Geometries are stored as a mesh. Sources within a Speos Light Box are not required. Source data like .ies and ray file can be stored within a Speos Light Box, along with material and spectral data.
The Speos Black Box Import/Export option is found within the Speos Light Box feature in the following location within the software:

Once selected, the Speos Light Box Import/Export object can be found in the Simulation Tree under “Components.”

Within the Definitions panel of the Speos Light Box, the Black Box option must be set to true. The Axis System for the Black Box can be defined or be left as the default.

The next steps are to define the lenses/geometries that make up the Black Box by using the 3D view or selecting the objects in the Structure Tree.
Once all the geometries are selected the Black Box can be computed be selecting the “Compute” option.

A SPEOSLightBox file gets created and is located within the output folder in the project directory.

This file can then be sent to the necessary parties so that they may do more in-depth analysis without being exposed to propriety information.
How to Import a Speos Black Box What if you are a customer that has received a Speos Black Box and would like to run a stray light analysis on the system, how would you go about doing so? Well first, you will need to import the Speos Black Box.
Just as before, the import tool can be found in the Light Simulation Tab within the Components Menu:

The file with the. SPEOSLightBox extension will then need to be selected from the project output file directory, or wherever the file has been placed. Since this example is a Black Box, the Display Mode cannot be adjusted under the Preview section of the Speos Light Box definition:

The next step is to compute the Black Box.
Once the Black Box is imported and computed, the system can be used for further analysis like a stray light and ghost image analysis.

Users are now able to do more advanced analyses on systems that contain proprietary information that suppliers and vendors would prefer to keep hidden. The Black Box does not hinder or reduce the accuracy of the ray propagation through the system.
