The breakdown of a chemical caused by a reaction with water.

In additive manufacturing, hydrolysis usually refers to water getting into polymer filament or powder that is hygroscopic and changing the chemical composition of the material, making it unusable. For this reason, many materials are stored in vacuum-sealed backs or with desiccants in their bags.

It may also refer to the use of water to dissolve highly hygroscopic materials that are used as support materials.
