A family of naturally produced polyester materials. PHAs are produced through the bacterial fermentation of lipids or sugars. The process can produce both thermoplastics and elastomers with a wide range of melting temperatures. PHAs can be biocompatible and are biodegradable.

In additive manufacturing, PHA materials can be used as a biodegradable and biocompatible material for fused deposition modeling. It is an alternative to petroleum-based polymers. It can also be mixed with other polymers and additives to give it desired properties.
