The resent launch of OSIRIS-REx probe to visit the asteroid Bennu was a milestone for Arizona. In “Arizona solidifies position as a leader in space technology” I review how ASU, UofA and Tempe’s Kinnetx played a key role in device design and development as well as mission and scientific control.
The Arizone high tech community gathered in downtown Phoenix Wednesday night to celebrate the leaders in the Biotech community at the annual AZBio Awards. As the premier event of a very busy AZBio Weekthe audience was joined by key companies and investors from outside of Arizona as well. The winners showed the diversity and promise of what companies in the state have accomplished and what they plan to do in the future. Governor Ducey also stopped by to say a few words about the progress that the community has made. A list of the winners can be found at the bottom of this post with links to more information describing what they have done to make the world a better place.
Every year we are pleased to see more and more people that we work with take home the trophies provided by PADT. Once again we made the awards themselves using a combination of 3D Printing and traditional manufaturing.
As a bit of a humble brag, we had the pleasure of providing assistance to the following individuals, shools, and companies who were recognized:
Global Med was recognized as 2016 Bioscience Company of the Year. They have used PADT for prototyping and even low volume production of their innovative telemedicine solution. Their growth has allowed for the delivery of quality health car to places around the world that are ohterwise unreachable.
Salutaris MD won a Fast Track award for their device that treats wet macular digenerations. We are proud to have been involved at the very begining during prototyping and most recently as they prepare for clinical trials.
ASU’s Dr. George Poste received the 2016 AZBio Pioneer Award for Lifetime Achievement for the significant contributions he has made during his carreer. In addition the recipient of the 2016 Arizona Bioscience Researcher of the Year award was the ASU BioDesign Institute’s Stephen Johnston, PhD. The University in general, and the Biodesign Institute in particular, are long time customers and heavy users of ANSYS and Stratasys products proved and supported by PADT.
Paradise Valley School’s Marni Landry was recognized with the Michael A. Cusanovich Bioscience Educator of the Year. PV school district was one of th first High Schools to adopt 3D Printing into their STEM ciriculum.
In addition, we were very pleased to see that one of our awards will be headed to Washington with Kyrtsten Sinema who was recongnized for her efforts to promote BioTech and Arizona in congress. Rep Sinema represents the district that includes PADT’s main office in Tempe and has been one of our favorite politicians since her bi-partisisn and common sense efforts in the Arizona State Legislature.
And finaly, a shout out to one of the other Fast Track award winners, Beacon Biomedical. PADT is looking at Beacon as an Angel Investment oportunity and they are across the hallway from PADT StartupLabs at CEI in Phoenix.
A big congratulations to all of the winners. The Bioscience commnity in the state is growing and at or near critical mass. From High Schools to large corporations with everything in between, our local companies are making the world a better place through better health technology.

About 40 people joined us at CEI this Monday at the start of Arizona BioScience week for some blunt talk about Medical Device development for startups. It was a great crowd and the quesitons were almost as (OK, maybe more) useful as the talk.
The gist of the seminar was a look at what it really takes to develop a medical device. We talked about the FDA, ISO 13485, QMS’s and the very well defined process that all companies must follow. We also talked a bit about tansfering to manufacturing and shared some lessons learned.

There is nothing better than seeing the powerful and interesting way that other engineers are using the same tools you use. That is why ANSYS, Inc. and PADT teamed up on Thursday to hold an “ANSYS Arizona Innovation Conference” at ASU SkySong where users could come to share and learn.
The day kicked off with Andy Bauer from ANSYS welcoming everyone and giving them an update on the company and some general overarching direction for the technology. Then Samir Rida from Honeywell Aerospace gave a fantastic keynote sharing how simulation drive the design of their turbine engines. As a former turbine engine guy, I found it fascinating and exciting to see how accurate and detailed their modeling is.
Next up was my talk on the Past, Present, and Future of simulation for product development. The point of the presentation was to take a step back and really think about what simulation is, what we have been doing, and what it needs to look at in the future. We all sort of agreed that we wanted voice activation and artificial intelligence built in now. If you are interested, you can find my presentation here: padt-ansys-innovation-az-2016.pdf.
After a short break ANSYS’s Sara Louie launched into a discussion on some of the new Antenna Systems modeling capabilities, simulating multiple physics and large domains with ANSYS products. The ability to model the entire interaction of an antenna including large environments was fascinating.
Lunchtime discussions focused on the presentations in the morning as well as people sharing what they were working on.
The afternoon started with a review by Hoang Vinh of ANSYS of the ANSYS AIM product. This was followed by customer presentations. Both Galtronics and ON Semiconductor shared how they drive the design of their RF systems with ANSYS HFSS and related tools. Then Nammo Talley shared how they incorporated simulation into their design process and then showed an example of a projectile redesign from a shoulder launched rocket that was driven by simulation in ANSYS CFX. They had the added advantage of being able to show something that blows up, always a crowd pleaser.
Another break was followed by a great look at how Ping used CFD to improve the design of one of their drivers. They used simulation to understand the drag on the head through an entire swing and then add aerodynamic features that improved the performance of the club significantly. Much of the work is actually featured in an ANSYS Advantage article.
We wrapped things up with an in depth technical look at Shock and Vibration Analysis using ANSYS Mechanical and Multiphysics PCB Analysis with the full ANSYS product suite.
The best part of the event was seeing how all the different physics in ANSYS products were being used and applied in different industries. People around the country are starting to recognize that Arizona is a great place to grow tech startups. Right now our big advantages is low cost but we can do more. In “Being the lower cost option is just the start – 5 ways we can make Arizona a preferred place for growing startups” I suggest five things we can focus on as a community to make that happen.
After three years on the market and signs that sales were increasing year over year, we decided it was time to go through our popular training book “Introduction to the ANSYS Parametric
Design Language (APDL)” and make some updates and reformat it so that it can be published as a Kindle e-book. The new Second Edition includes two additonal chapters: APDL Math and Using APDL with ANSYS Mechanical. The fact that we continue to sell more of these useful books is a sign that APDL is still a vibrant and well used language, and that others out there find power in its simplicity and depth.
This book started life as a class that PADT taught for many years. Then over time people asked if they could buy the notes. And then they asked for a real book. This week’s TechFlash focuses on the role that small technical companies play in providing key Research & Development contributions to significant projects. Inspired by a visit to just such a company in Utah, “Small tech businesses R&D to the rescue” shares our experience in this area.
A nice writeup in the Phoenix Business Journal by Hayley Ringle on PADT’s recent win of a America Makes grant to study how unique structures, called Lattice Structures, behave in 3D Printed parts.
PADT’s Eric Miller was asked to return to take part in a discussion about the somewhat hidden Space industry in Arizona. Eric was joined by Kjell Stakkestad, CEO of KinetX Aerospace to answer questions and provide insight into this critical part of Arizona’s high tech industry landscape.

I feel a little awkward as an engineer giving advice on marketing, but this stuff works for us and there is no reason it can’t work for others. In “5 simple goals for social network marketing” I go over the goals we have found that helped us build a Social Networking strategy that has proven to help our business. Heck, you are reading this post so we must be doing something right.
Business is often a process of trying to influence people to do something you want. Study after study shows something simple, the approach that seemed to work over and over again was the simplest: make things easy. In “Nudging behavior by making things easy” I look at this phenomenon and relate it to the business of high technology.
