A traditional manufacturing metal molding process utilizes a pattern in the shape of the desired part and sand as the mold. The pattern is placed inside the sand and the sand is packed around the pattern and left to harden. The pattern is then removed and molten metal is poured into the cavity to produce the part.

In additive manufacturing, the pattern can be produced with multiple additive manufacturing processes.
