Running in Circles Pays off at 11th Annual Pat’s Run for Team PADT

For three months we walked, jogged, ran, and whimpered around the lake in front of our office. We trained as a team, we stretched, we mumbled, but we stuck with it. This past weekend running in circles paid off with a very successful showing at the 11th Annual Pat’s run at ASU.  I you were at the race, you may have seen our bright orange shirts in the sea of the official blue that most people were wearing.

To get to Saturday’s race, every Tuesday and Thursday we sat on big foam cylinders and yoga mats in the grass.  We butt kicked and we pranced in the parking lot. And then we starting making a clockwise orbit around the lake across the street. At first, it was walking with a little running.  Invectives were hurled.  But over time the walkers got faster, the walk/runners ran more, and the runners got faster. We found out that the sidewalk around the north lake here at the ASU Research Park is exactly a half mile, as if the designers planned it that way. We learned that if it is 82f outside you need to drink a lot of water to stay hydrated.  With the help of our fantastic Training, Susan Leveque from Physix, we worked through upset joints, asthma, and too much time spent in front of the computer.  Everyone that could make it to Pat’s Run this past Saturday did fantastic.  The most noticeable characteristic was that every single one of us had a smile on their face at the finish.

If you are not familiar with Pat’s Run, it is a charity race to honor Pat Tillman and other courageous men and women who have sacrificed everything for their country. It is a 4.2 mile loop starting and ending at the Arizona State University stadium where Pat played for ASU and then the Cardinals before he put his NFL career on hold to serve his country in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. The course loops around Tempe Town lake and ends with a run in to the stadium and on to the field.  Over 30,000 people participated this year. The weather was perfect, the event was well organized, and everyone on the 2015 PADT Running Team walked, jogged, and/or ran a great race.  Until you have done a big event like that, it is hard to understand how encouraging the large crowd is. They count your top 5 finishers, so our official team time ws 39:37 or a 9:26 min/mile pace.  We were fortunate enough to also have friends and family run with the team.

A big shout-out to Shannon, Cyril, and of our primary trainer Susan from Physix for setting up the whole thing.  We literally did not have the time or bandwidth to do this without your help, and we certainly didn’t have the knowledge.  The plan worked and you took all of us way beyond where we started.

Real World 3D Printing: PADT Helps ULA Save with Stratasys Digital Manufacturing

Every once in a while a customer hits a home run with Additive Manufacturing, and United Launch Alliance had done that with their application of Stratasys technology to the production of flight-ready components for their rockets.  They were able to leverage 3D printing to take one component from 140 parts to 16, reducing the risks associated with creating the assembly, the piece part costs, and the assembly cost. And PADT is proud to say we were partners in this effort with ULA and Stratasys.

If you are not familiar with ULA, they are the worlds premier launch service company in the US.  It is a joint venture of Boeing and Lockheed that launches the majority of military and civilian payloads that are sent in to space. True "rocket scientists" who are headquartered down the street from PADT's Littleton Colorado office.  They just released a ton of information on how they are using the Stratasys devices they acquired through PADT as an example of what the technology can achieve.

We are highlighting his application as a way to let people know that 3D Printing is not just about makers, nor is it just about engineering prototypes. Every day users are creating production hardware to produce usable parts that save them time and money.  Ducts for rockets are a perfect use of the technology because they are complex, low volume, and can make single parts that need to be made in multiple pieces using traditional methods.   This application also highlights the power of the material choices available to users of Stratasys FDM technology.  ULA is using ULTEM 9085 for these ducts because it is durable, lightweight, and can stand up to the heat of the launch event. 

Those of you familiar with the process will notice the dots on the duct. Those are target dots for 3D scanning. ULA took the technology one step further and scan the completed hardware to make sure the manufactured part is within specifications.

The team at ULA has been a pleasure to work with.  They saw the promise of Additive Manufacturing but dealt with it like the seasoned professionals that they are. They started by making engineering prototypes, then as they got a feel for the technology they switched to the production of tooling for manufacturing.  They have now developed the confidence needed to move to flight hardware.  In addition to supplying the machines, PADT consulted with ULA early on, touring their manufacturing facilities to better understand their needs and taking them to see how others are using FDM for manufacturing.  We were fortunate enough to even be invited to attend the launch of their Orion spacecraft from Florida as their guest.  

We are very excited about the additional uses ULA and other companies will develop in the near future for Additive Manufacturing.

Press Release: Grand Opening of 3D Printing and Design Resource for Start-Up Companies in Phoenix

The Phoenix area startup community gathered last night at the Center for Entrepreneurial Innovation to celebrate the grand opening of PADT's StartUpLabs. It was a bit warm for April but around 120 people made it out to the Gateway Community College campus to tour the facility, enjoy some food and beverage, and to hear a few words from representatives from a collection of three and four letter acronyms: CEI, PADT, the ACA, ATI, and PCC*. PADT StartUpLabs is a facility at CEI focused on delivering 3D Printing and Design services to early stage startups, rounding out the already excellent offerings at CEI including business planning, leadership training, marketing, and legal services. 

It was an opportunity for those who came to tour the facilities and network with others in the startup community including investors, inventors, entrepreneurs, professional service providers, and some students.  You can read the press release below or download a PDF here. Grand Opening of 3D Printing and Design Resource for Start-Up Companies in Phoenix

PADT and CEI officially open StartUpLabs to provide 3D Printing and design services to high-tech startups. StartupLabs focuses on helping early stage companies meet their product development and prototyping needs in a timely, efficient, and cost effect way through 3D Printing, Mentoring, and Design Services.

Tempe, AZ – April 20, 2015 – Phoenix Analysis & Design Technologies, Inc. (PADT), the Southwest’s largest provider of simulation, product development, and 3D Printing services and products, is pleased to announce the grand opening of StartUpLabs, a joint effort with the Center for Entrepreneurial Innovation (CEI). Located in CEI’s Phoenix, Arizona facility, the lab features state-of-the-art Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) systems from Stratasys, leading Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools, and the equipment and space to provide needed services to early stage companies developing physical products.

The official Grand Opening for StartUpLabs was held at CEI on April 20th, 2015 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM. However, CEI clients have been utilizing the lab since the beginning of the year, with great success.

Press Release: Fast, Intuitive, and Precise 3D Scanning Solution from Steinbichler Added to PADT’s Portfolio

Another press release from PADT announcing a new partner.  The truth is we have the advantage of having worked with some great companies in 2014 and we are now fortunate enough to be able to add several of the great products we use in-house to our product offering. It all kind of happened at once.  Don't worry, we are almost done… only one or two more surprises out there.

At the beginning of the year we mentioned that we were offering full professional optical scanning. That service was based on using a Steinbichler blue light scanner. And as is usually with a tool we really like, we quickly negotiated an agreement with that company to represent their products. They offer the COMET line of blue light scanners and the T-SCAN line of laser scanners. There is of course a nice software package, called colin3D, that serves as a way to interact with the devices and get the data into a useful form. Both technologies offer high-precision at a reasonable price, something that not only PADT, but many of our customers were looking for.

Tempe Preparatory Academy’s High School Robotics team, FRC Team #3944 All Knights, was on the winning alliance for the FIRST Robotics Competition, FRC, Arizona East Regional Competition on March 19-21st. And they are therefore on their way to St Louis, Missouri to represent Arizona at Nationals.  Last night they were on local Phoenix channel 12 to show off their robot and announce their GoFundMe campaign to raise the $25,000 in travel and entrance fees.

Press Release: Faster 3D Printing Support Removal of Wider Range of Materials with PADT’s New SCA-1200HT

IMG_7411We are very excited to announce that at the end of 2014 PADT shipped the first lot of our new Support Cleaning Apparatus, or SCA.  After almost 6 years of great service, the SCA1200-HT replaces the SCA-1200. The new system is a redesign based upon the 6,700 plus systems that PADT manufactured and supported around the world.  The biggest change to users is broader preset temperature range, allowing users to now remove support from their Nylon and Polycarbonate parts.  The motor and pump are a custom PADT design with better performance and durability. The control and ergonomic interface have also been modified for greater ease of use.

If you are not familiar with PADT's SCAs and their use, they are accessories for the Stratasys line of Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) additive manufacturing systems, commonly referred to as 3D Printers.  These systems extrude the build material and a water soluble support material that holds up any overhanging geometry.  The soluble material can be removed with gentle agitation in a slightly basic solution of warm water. We designed the SCA's as the easiest to use and fasted way to remove the support material.

Selling and supporting our own product has been a great experience for our team. Since the company was founded in 1994, we have been designing, simulating, and supporting our customer's products. With the SCA line we are able to practice what we preach on our own product. We have especially enjoyed supporting the products in Europe and Asia, allowing us to get to know the Stratasys Channel overseas as well as customers.

Faster 3D Printing Support Removal of

Wider Range of Materials  with PADT’s New SCA-1200HT

PADT ships a new generation of their popular Support Cleaning Apparatus product used to remove soluble supports from 3D Printed parts created using Stratasys Fused Deposition Modeling systems.  

 

Tempe, AZ – January 20, 2015 – Phoenix Analysis & Design Technologies, Inc. (PADT, Inc.), the Southwest’s largest provider of simulation, product development, and rapid prototyping services and products, is pleased to announce the release by Stratasys, Ltd. (SSYS) of the new SCA-1200HT support removal system. This new system is designed, manufactured, and supported by PADT and sold exclusively by Stratasys, Ltd for use with their Mojo, uPrint, Dimension, and Fortus Additive Manufacturing systems, also known as 3D Printers.   

The SCA-1200HT is an improved design based on the successful SCA-1200 that has been in use around the world since 2008. The new system features four preset temperature levels for use with a wider range of materials including polycarbonate and nylon. It also includes a proprietary custom pump with longer life, simpler repair and maintenance, and an overall lower operating noise level.  The controls, lid, and parts basket have been ergonomically redesigned while the internal systems have been simplified and made easier to replace by the user or local support provider.

Rey Chu, co-owner of PADT and the person behind the SCA line of products said “With over 6,700 of our previous systems in the field, we gathered a wealth of knowledge on performance and reliability. We used that knowledge to design a system that cleans parts faster, is easier to maintain, and gives a much better user experience.  The hands-off support removal provided by Stratasys’ Soluble Support Technology and PADT’s SCA is a huge advantage to people who use FDM technology for their 3D Printing.  With the SCA-1200HT that advantage just got larger.”

Once parts are printed, users simply remove them from their Stratasys system, place them in the SCA-1200HT, set a cleaning time and temperature, and then walk away.  The device gently agitates the 3D Printed parts in the heated cleaning solution, effortlessly dissolving away all of the support material.  This process is more efficient and friendly than other additive manufacturing systems using messy powders or support material that must be manually removed.

(VR&D) for PADT to become a distributor of VR&D’s industry leading structural optimization tools in the Southwestern United States. These powerful tools will be offered alongside ANSYS Mechanical as a way for PADT’s customers to use topological optimization and shape optimization to determine the best geometry for their products.

The GENESIS program is a Finite Element solver written by leaders in the optimization space. It offers sizing, shape, topography, topometry, freeform, and topology optimization algorithms.  No other tool delivers so many methods for users to determine the ideal configuration for their mechanical components. PADT recommends that ANSYS Mechanical users who require topological optimization access GENESIS through the GENESIS Topology for ANSYS Mechanical tool, or GTAM. This extension runs inside ANSYS Mechanical, allowing users the ability to use their ANSYS models and the ANSYS user interface while still accessing the power of GENESIS.  The extension allows the user to setup the topology optimization problem, optimize, post-processing, export optimized geometry all within ANSYS Mechanical user interface.

PADT is excited to celebrate the opening of PADT StartUp Labs, the advanced 3D Printing facility for startups located at CEI. PADT StartUpLabs is focused on working with other tenants at CEI.  Engineers from PADT hold regular office hours to answer questions about 3D Printing and product development.  Clients can also set up a consultation with anyone on our staff to talk about simulation, product design or test, quality systems, or manufacturing. The goal is to eventually expand these services to a broader audience.

Hike Run Ski Pi(e): Team Building at PADT

padt-pi-day-platesLast week was a big, and diverse, week for "team building" at PADT.  We learned some things and "bonded" in not-as-nerdy as you would think ways. A fun week had by all, with a lot of hard work thrown in between.  Over the years we have learned that we need to take a break now and then and do something "other" and mingle with people from different parts of the company.

The group preparing for this year's Pat's Run is over half way through their training.  Everyone is getting stronger and faster and we are all pleased with the fact that we don't feel like we are going to pass out at the end of a training session. A sign that Physix has been doing a great job.  We also got our team shirts:

Albuquerque Hike

While visiting Albuquerque, I was able to have some informal "team building" with Jeff Strain in the Albuquerque office.  We headed up to the Sandia mountain foothills and hiked Emudito Canyon.  A nice afternoon climb past some very beautiful scenery.  I was reminded that Albuquerque is also a mile high… pant pant pant.

2nd Annual Colorado Office Ski Trip (ACOST)

On Friday the PADT team in Colorado, accompanied by a two of us from the Tempe office, headed up to Breckenridge for a fantastic day of skiing.  Their was a bit of fresh snow and no real lines on the lift.  Fun was had by all even with a very wide range in ski/board skills.

Pi Day

Back in Tempe we celebrating 3/14/15 a day early. We like Pi day and we are nerdy, but not nerdy enough to come in to the office on a Saturday to celebrate that nerdiness.  We only have one Tauist in our ranks, so there was no open conflict.  We decided to make moon pies, cookies with ice cream between.

Encore Lunch and Learn: Designing and Simulating Products for 3D Printing

In February, PADT held a Lunch and Learn with the AZ Tech Council on "Designing and Simulating Products for 3D Printing."  The event sold out and we received a lot of interest in being able to attend over the web. So we have scheduled a second version of this presentation to be given live at CEI in Phoenix on March 23rd, 2015 that will also be broadcast over the web.

This proven technology has moved from prototyping to tooling and now the creation of final parts.  However, you can't just print your existing design. PADT will cover the techniques and processes needed to evaluate existing designs to find parts that can be switched to 3D printing as well as how to design new parts to take advantage of 3D printing.

3D Printing and Supply Chain Management

ISM-3D-Printing-CoverAs 3D Printing matures it is impacting a larger area within manufacturing companies.  Supply chain management is a key part of any organization that makes physical parts, and 3D Printing has a big, and sometimes ignored, impact there.  The Institute for Supply Chain Management made the topic their cover article for the March issue of their magazine: Inside Supply Management. The article does a good job of pointing out the realities of 3D Printing in a real manufacturing environment. 

The article featured input from PADT and other experts in the area.  Even if you are not directly involved in the supply chain side of things, it is worth a read to understand how the technology impacts things.  The section on building a business case for 3D Printing is especially useful.

There is a nice sidebar that covered some of the lessons we have learned here at PADT:

  • Don't Cheap Out – get a commercial quality 3D Printer that doesn't cut corners
  • It's not for everyone – make sure that 3D Printing has a real benefit for your company
  • Understand quality needs – quality is different with 3D Printed parts, know this and work with it
  • Set traceability standards – you need to know where your material came from and where the parts you make end up

Major Milestone Achieved: 3D Printing of a Full Turbine Engine

Not long ago the sages in the additive manufacturing world said "Someday in the future we will be able to print a complete Turbine Engine."  That someday is now, much sooner than many of us predicted.  Researchers at Monash University in Australia recently created a modified version of a Safron Microturbo Auxiliary Power Unit using 3D Printing.  The whole thing.  Milestone Achieved.

Turbine Engines are really the peak of machine design. They contain every nasty thing you might run into in other machines, but spin faster and run hotter.  It's hard stuff. The geometry is difficult, lots of small features and holes, and significant assembly and tolerance constraints.  Getting a demonstrator built like this is a huge deal.  As a former turbine engine engineer and a long time user of additive manufacturing, I'm amazed.

The "3d Printer" they used was a huge Concept Laser Direct Laser Melting system.  The technology uses a laser to draw on the top of a bed of powder medal, melting the medal in small pools the bind and create a fully dense part with cast like properties.  They used three different metals: nickel alloy, titanium, and aluminum.

Now that someone has achieved this milestone, the industry can move forward with confidence that even more can be done with metal 3D Printing.  Much was learned in the creation of this advanced device that we can build on and apply to other industries and applications. 

Much is said in the twittersphere and press about printing food or custom dog tags, but this sort of high value industrial application is where the real impact of 3D Printing will be felt. It shows that companies can develop new more efficient products in less time and that are not constrained by traditional manufacturing methods. 

PHX Startup Week Going with Tours at CEI and PADT StartUPLab

PADT_StartUpLabs-1Phoenix Startup Week has started!  One of the key events on the first day centered on tours and talks at CEI, which kikced off with tours of PADT StartUpLabs, the advanced 3D Printing facility for startups located at CEI. This was followed with CEI tours and an afternoon of talks on Medical Device startups.  Then the tours repeated for those who could not make the early ones.

Not in Phoenix?

Many of you who read this blog are not from the Phoenix area. You may be wondering "What, a vibrant startup community? I thought Phoenix was old people and nutty gun-totting right-wing nut-jobs?"  Well, we certainly have a few of  those but since WWII when large aerospace and electronics companies moved to the valley, Phoenix has been a major high-technology hub.  It is an easy place to start a business and has all the resources and talent to be successful.  PADT has been helping startups in the area for over 20 years now, and we continue to see a steady increase in the number and diversity of new companies that we interact with.  So don't believe what you see on the news, this is a vibrant, high-tech place with great people and a business friendly outlook, affordable housing, and weather that doesn't force us to spend the morning shoveling out our driveways.
